1. With BAC’s growing status on the international arbitration scene, a succession of delegations have visited BAC in recent months from foreign law schools and Sino-foreign joint programs (or “SFCRS”, as they are known in China), for purpose of on-site observation and study, including a delegation from the Law School of the Erasmus University Rotterdam on March 30, 2011; and on May 10, a delegation of law students from Finland’s University of Lapland; next, on May 17, a group of participants in the “Chinese Tax Law Workshop,” co-run by the law schools of Remin University and France’s Aix-Marseille University.

2. Appropriate drafting of dispute resolution clauses in international business transactions is an important reflection of an attorney’s dedication to clients’ best interests. On May 17, 2011, BAC’s Secretary-General Wang Hongsong responded to an invitation to meet with over 50 attorneys from King & Wood’s Litigation and Arbitration division for a discussion about effective drafting of arbitration clauses.

3. On May 26, 2011, the 73rd BAC Arbitrator Session (fourth this year) was held in BAC International Conference Hall with the theme “Looking at the Advance of Arbitration Procedures from an Institutional Perspective.” The session was hosted by Ms. Zhang Lixia, a BAC arbitrator and Director of Hua Mao & Gui Gu Law Firm. Leading the session was Dr. Chen Fuyong, Director of BAC office’s division III. During the session, Dr. Chen Fuyong discussed and analyzed at length numerous examples of issues that are likely to create friction between parties and the tribunal, as arbitrators attempt to expedite the process. He concluded with some pertinent suggestions borne both of his deep knowledge of international rules and his experience of domestic practices.

4. In the afternoon of May 31, 2011, the 11th (second thus far this year) Construction Project and Property Dispute Arbitrator Seminar was held in the BAC International Conference Hall. The theme of the seminar was “Legal Disputes Arising in the Construction and Real Estate Fields as a Result of the “Home Buying Restriction Order,” and Some Other Typical Difficult Cases.”. Over 20 BAC arbitrators participated in the seminar, hosted by Dr. Zhao Hang, one of the organizers of the event. The proceedings included the following sessions: session 1, on legal issues related to the “Real Estate Buying Restriction Order”; session 2, on some typical difficult cases in construction project and property disputes; and session 3, which was devoted to group discussion.

5. On June 15, 2011, Mr. Marc Ynzonides, Mr. Geert Potjewijd, Mr. Bommel van der Bend and Ms. Rachel Li, lawyers from the Netherlands’ De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, visited the BAC. After introducing their respective agencies and practices, both the BAC and the visiting parties expressed an interest in further cooperating in of the practice of international arbitration and relevant research.
