1. APRAG Conference 2013 held in Beijing
    “APRAG Conference 2013” was held in Beijing, in which several hot issues have been discussed, such as opportunities and challenges of the Asia-Pacific international arbitration as well as arbitration’s development prospect in the next decade.

2. The newly amended Arbitration Rules of Chengdong Arbitration Commission effective on August 1
    On July 2, 2013, Chengdu Arbitration Commission held the third plenary session of the third commission, during which the Arbitration Rules of Chengdong Arbitration Commission (hereinafter referred to as Arbitration Rules) was amended. The amended Arbitration Rules was duly implemented on August 1. The contents of the amendment mainly included: the cancellation of the service by public announcement, the increase of the clauses of property preservation and evidence preservation before arbitration, and the provision of determination of the authentication institution by lot.

International:

1.CIArb unveiled New property disputes service for landlords

A new property disputes service from CIArb will allow both commercial and private landlords, and tenants of both sectors, to settle their property disputes. In addition, the new service, the first of its kind for the Institute, will deal with a variety of different issues including property and ownership interference; boundary or nuisance by noise; professional disputes claims against professionals for negligence; and general issues regarding easements and rights of way .

2.ICC announces newly named Commission on Arbitration and ADR

The ICC Executive Board has approved a name change for the ICC Commission on Arbitration. The commission’s new name is the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR. The change aims to better reflect the broad scope of the commission’s activities, which primarily encompass international arbitration but also all other dispute resolution services offered by ICC.

3.CC decisions on advance costs

In the interest of transparency and to facilitate the parties’ understanding of their routines, the SCC has published a brief describing the criteria taken into account by the SCC Board when determining the advance on costs in cases where the amount in dispute exceeded EUR 100.000.000.

4.Singapore International Arbitration Center Announces the Appointment of New Deputy Registrar

The Chairman and Board of Directors of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre are pleased to announce that Mr Vivekananda N. has been appointed to the position of Deputy Registrar of SIAC with effect from 1 August 2013. Vivekananda will succeed Ms Camilla Godman who is leaving SIAC to spend time with her family.

5.WIPO Mediation for Proceedings Instituted in the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI-BR)

A framework for collaboration between the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI-BR) and WIPO has been established upon the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on September 12, 2012. Under the MOU, INPI-BR and the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center established a joint dispute resolution procedure to facilitate the mediation of intellectual property disputes pending before INPI-BR. As of July 15, 2013, the new mediation option is available in trademark proceedings filed with INPI-BR.
