BAC Representatives Participate in 2008 ICCA Annual Conference

From 8th to June 10th, 2008 the ICCA Annual Conference was held in Dublin, Ireland. ICCA is one of the most important international arbitration organizations at the present; the biennial conference is the largest of its kind and the most influential conference in the circle of international arbitration. This conference was undertaken by the Bar Council of Ireland, discussing current issues such as the increase in the arbitration of investment disputes and amendment of the UNCITRAL arbitration rules, and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the New York Convention. The conference was attended by more than 700 representatives from over 50 countries around the world, including the BAC’s own, Secretaries Wang Xilian and Fang Jian.

At the opening ceremony, Irish Prime Minister, Brian Cowen, T. D. delivered a speech and offered a rousing welcome to the delegates. Meanwhile, he also gave a briefing on the developing situation of international arbitration in Ireland and Europe, as well as internationally. Finally, he enthusiastically invited delegates to participate in the various social activities arranged by Conference organizing group, and wished the conference a great success.

During the two-day seminar, the main speakers gave several speeches on topics such as “international investment contract arbitration”, “multi-dispute resolution” and “the new trend of international arbitration development.” In addition to the speeches, many discussions of current issues were held by the attendees. The BAC delegates really enjoyed speaking about practical arbitration experience, and relating many current issues to daily work at the BAC.

During the conference, BAC representatives Wang Xilian and Fang Jian also had a friendly exchange with some of the BAC’s foreign arbitrators. Among these representatives, two of the arbitrators ---Nael Bunni and Yang Yanlong served as key speakers.

This year’s conference was a great success. In 2006, BAC Secretary-general, Madam Wang Hongsong led a delegation to attend the last session, held in Montreal, Canada. The next ICCA session will be opened in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2010. By participating in this conference, the BAC not only promoted our own brand, but also accessed first –hand information on the current development of international commercial arbitration practice, laying a solid foundation for more extensive cooperation with other agencies in the future.
