  Formally established on June 4, 2009, the BAC Mediation Professional Group has provided a platform for mediators and arbitrators to exchange mediation experience and skills. In the same month, the Professional Group for Construction Projects and the Real Estates Group formally merged into the Professional Group for Construction Projects and Real Estates. All the above-mentioned professional groups are the learning-type organizations spontaneously incorporated by the arbitrators or mediators of the Committee, who determine the forms and contents of the activities thereof.

  On June 5, 2009, Stephanie E. Smith, a professor from Stanford University, paid a visit to the Committee, to chat with the secretary-general of the Committee; they considered future cooperation between the BAC and Stanford.

  In June 2009, the foreign interns came around successively. They are all students from law schools in the United States, including institutes of higher education such as New York University, Hastings College of the Law, Harvard University, and Pepperdine University, with experience covering contracts, antitrust, dispute resolution, and other commercial practice areas. They contribute to the routine case-handling, each supervised by a secretary, during their internships, as well as studying Chinese law and arbitration systems, participating in exchange seminars, and visiting the courts, other judicial authorities, and non-profit organizations. The foreign internship program provides an excellent opportunity for legal and cultural exchange within the BAC; the interns and the secretariat mingle their knowledge of Chinese and American law and arbitration.

  On June 15, 2009, the delegation comprised of the secretary-general, arbitrators, and the staff of the Committee went to Sichuan to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for construction assistance building a primary school in Yuguan Village, Sanhe Town, Jiangyou City of Sichuan. The delegation also called on local teachers and students to donate stationery to the students of this school. On June 14, 2009, the secretary-general of the Committee conducted a training in arbitrator’s professional ethics and code of conduct, arbitration practices, etc… for local Sichuan arbitration institutions, including one in Mianyang.

  On June 21-23, 2009, upon the invitation of Asia Pacific Regional Arbitration Group (APRAG), the BAC’s secretary-general, Madam Hongsong Wang, visited Seoul, South Korea, where she attended its annual general meeting and was re-elected as its vice-chairman.

  On the afternoon of June 26, 2009, the chairman of APRAG and the former chairman of Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, Mr. Yang Liangyi, were invited to be the keynote speakers of the 4th phase (2009) of arbitrator salon activity (totalling 52 phases) of the Committee. This salon lecture was focused on “The ‘Injunction’ in International Trade and Arbitration” and was presided over by an arbitrator of the Committee – Mr. Wei Yaorong. The professions of attendees spanned multiple fields and included arbitrators of the Committee and other legal professionals.

  On June 27 and June 28, 2009, the second phase course of the BAC “International Commercial Arbitration Training” was successfully completed. The third phase will continue on August 1 and August 2, 2009.

  In the International Commercial Arbitration Training Course co-hosted by the BAC and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators East Asia Regional Branch on October 28 and October 29, 2008, fifty-nine people finally passed the examination and received their membership qualification in the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.   On the afternoon of June 28, 2009, the industrial alliance visiting mission from four cities and counties of central Taiwan, including Taichung Mayor – Hu Zhiqiang, Changhua County Magistrate – Zhuo Boyuan, the head of Agricultural Department of Nantou County – Chen Chaowang, and Taichung County Magistrate – Huang Zhongsheng, responded to their invitation by visiting the Committee. The secretary-general and arbitrators warmly received the members of the visiting mission and had a friendly exchange.

  A “Simulated Arbitration Seminar” co-hosted by China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) and Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre was held in Beijing on June 2, 2009 and in Hong Kong on June 5, respectively. The simulated arbitration aims to introduce the arbitration procedures and rules of China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) and of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. The method of instruction, simulation, fosters an intuitive impression on the above-mentioned arbitration rules.

  The China – EU Information Society project online arbitration discussion and summary meeting was held in the University of International Business and Economics on the afternoon of June 8, 2009.

  On June 10, 2009, the grand 50th anniversary of foundation of China Maritime Arbitration Commission was held in Beijing, with more than 150 leaders and insiders from the Commission of Legislative Affairs of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, the Supreme Court, the Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council, the Ministry of Commissions, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Shipping Industry, and the Insurance Industry in attendance.
